Why Do We Need To Build In The Green Belt?

Approximately 77% (over three quarters) of land in Barnsley is designated as Green Belt. This provides a tightly drawn boundary around the main urban areas.  This is inhibiting the necessary economic growth aspirations of Barnsley.  It has been assessed that the existing urban area cannot accommodate the development needs of the Borough and that there is need to release Green Belt land and allocate for a range of uses, particularly employment/ commercial and housing.

Barnsley West is an area of Green Belt in the west of the urban area.  It is bordered by the existing urban areas of Barugh Green, Higham, Pogmoor and Gawber/ Redbrook.  Development will not constitute coalescence of main urban areas.  The site is also separated from the wider Green Belt by the M1 Motorway which provides a strong defensible barrier.
