Whilst the site appears to be greenfield, as little as 50 years ago, the site was subject to extensive opencast mining. The site was then back-filled and the quality of the land has been affected by this. By using the site to accommodate some of Barnsley’s necessary growth we are preventing the loss of valuable agricultural land elsewhere in the Borough.
